It’s about two ex-Texan rangers, Gus and Call who run the Hat Creek Cattle company together. It’s a Pulitzer prize-winning novel. The story takes the rangers on a cattle drive to Montana during which they meet murderous, kidnapping Indians and gamblers and more. Gus doesn’t really want to go but then he hears the woman he once loved lives en-route and so he agrees to the trip. Call was feeling restless and itching to go. It’s must have been a stimulating and exciting read when it came out in 1985 today I didn’t find it any great shakes. After all, so many of these American sagas have come and gone since then it didn’t really have that much of an allure for me. It would be a fun read for boys maybe. Just seemed unnecessarily lengthy.
